Sir,
I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter
of December 12th, and to express the Directors' unreserved
and genuine regret and apology for the publication in the Far
Eastern Economic Review of December 8th of the passage of
which you complained.
It is a matter of the greatest regret that the editor
of the Review published such an ill-considered and unwarranted
statement. Such a publication places the Directors in a very difficult position having regard particularly to the constantly-
repeated and precise directions given to the editor as to the
policy of the paper which was founded for the purpose of assist-
ing the trade and economic interests of Hong Kong and to the directions which have been given to him to avoid in every
possible way anything which might embarrass the Government
or the work of the Exchange Control.
It may be added that the Directors hope to engage a qualified journalist from England who will assist them in the
ધો
supervision of the Review and to avoid any such regrettable acts
on the part of the present editor but in the meantime the
strongest possible action has been taken with a view to avoiding any transgression.
The apology in the form which you wish will be
published in the next issue of the Review.
I am,
Yours faithfully,
(Sgd.) J.R. Jones
The Hon. C. G. S. Follows, C.M. G.,
Financial Secretary,
Colonial Secretariat, HCG KONG.
Chairman of Directors.
